Managing Problem Behaviours in Children

Problem behaviours are those that aren't considered easily acceptable by society. They can occur in children as well as adults. A behaviour disorder among children may include argument, aggression, anger or defiance around adults etc. which can be identified with their repeated frequency and regularity. Although it may look like tantrums in the initial stage but in the later stages it may negatively affect the social relations, communications, and learning of a child and cause harm to them, their families, and their peers.

Identifying the problem and guiding the parents and children about it is critical and needs skilled hands-on experience. The foundation of a modern-day child’s unusual behaviour lay primarily on the influence of his surroundings which include separation from parents, witnessing domestic violence, mother’s rejection of child as an infant, self-stimulation, skill deficiency, poverty etc. The other apparent reasons for inapt behaviour could be genetic or physical.

The specific types of allegedly demanding actions like banging head, shirking from going to school, ardently wishing to escape from any situation, can be managed by patiently talking to them, paying attention to them, appreciating the good, avoiding smacking and rewarding them for their exemplary self-control. In tandem with involving them in learning skill behaviours like swimming, painting, music, and other sports activities as per their inclination brings a decent outcome.

Ignorance and suppression of the problem increases it by manifolds. To nip the issue in bud, parents need to be observant, cautious, vocal and possess the readiness to accept to obtain the required help of qualified professionals like Counsellors or Clinical-psychologist for their child to transform his problematic behaviour into a confident and prolific one.
